  • Author: ANGELA
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Description

A versatile and flavorful Southern-inspired seasoning blend that makes the perfect crispy, golden fish fry at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for heat preference)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • Optional: dried herbs (e.g., parsley or thyme), lemon zest

Instructions

  • Combine cornmeal, flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl. Mix well.
  • Pat fish fillets dry with a paper towel. Dip them in buttermilk or milk, then coat them evenly in the seasoning mixture.
  • Heat oil in a cast-iron skillet to 350°F–375°F.
  • Fry fish fillets in batches, 3–4 minutes per side, until golden and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the skillet.
  • Remove the fish and place it on a wire cooling rack to drain excess oil.
  • Serve hot with sides like coleslaw, hushpuppies, and tartar sauce.

Notes

This homemade seasoning blend is budget-friendly, customizable, and perfect for frying various types of fish or even vegetables and chicken tenders. Adjust the heat and seasoning levels to suit your taste.
